Korea has around 3,300 islands, including 464 inhabited islands. There has been a constant call for systematic management and conservation of these islands. KIDI was established as an answer to the call to support and develop the unique nature of the islands.

Establishment of mid to long-term development plan for an increase of income and welfare of the islanders; tourism invigoration; utilization of the ecosystem, culture, history, and resources of the islands; and a growth of the value of islands
Education, consultation, and public relations to promote the development of islands

Implementation of projects entrusted by a central administrative agency and local government
