To be the lighthouse guiding the
'Grand Voyage of the Islands'
Welcome to the Korea Island Development Institute (KIDI).
The Korea Island Development Institute was established as the world’s first government-led institution dedicated to islands. Our mission is to enhance the value of Korea’s islands through systematic research, improve the quality of life for island residents, and foster new growth opportunities for the future.
The launch of KIDI on October 8, 2021, marked the beginning of a significant transformation in Korea’s island policies, ushering in a new era of opportunities and challenges.
As one of the top countries in the world with a vast number of islands, Korea’s archipelagos are increasingly recognized as key engines of future growth. However, our islands face a pressing crisis of depopulation due to limited accessibility and inadequate living conditions, placing them at a greater risk of extinction compared to mainland regions.
In response, KIDI is committed to developing and implementing innovative, pragmatic, and future-oriented policies to transform our islands into vibrant places where people want to live and sought-after destinations that people want to visit.
With over 3,400 islands, Korea is truly a "nation of islands." Historically, Korea has been a maritime power, thriving in the "era of islands." Today, our islands are no longer the end of our territory but the starting points for reaching out to the world.
Guided by our vision of "Islands Bridging to the Future, Sailing towards the World," KIDI aims to serve as a global lighthouse, leading the way as a specialized research institute that paves the future of Korea’s islands on the global stage.
We sincerely ask for your continued interest, support, and encouragement.
Thnak you.
